Today we are reviewing The Art Of War Illustrated translated by James Trapp. The original Art Of War was written in the Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China by military general and philosopher, Sun Tzu. Although some doubt Sun Tzu's actual existence, this work is without a doubt a must-read. Unfortunately, some of this work has been lost throughout history, but unsurprisingly stood the test of time. And thanks to the amazing translator, James Trapp, we can read the Song dynasty version in modern English.

This beautiful copy of The Art Of War Illustrated can be found at Barne and Noble. The pages are folded and bound with thread, a technique invented in the Ming dynasty. Despite using an ancient technique this book is very sturdy and can be read without damaging the book.

I found James Trapp's translation clear and easy to comprehend. The book was extremely informative for westerners to understand. I was happy to see that this book included Chinese text, it gave the work an authentic touch.

I found the case studies after each chapter to be quite fascinating. The case studies provide a better understanding of Sun Tzu's advice reviewing the downfalls and victories of real historical battles. And overall, I found many of these stories to be interesting and informative.

Sun Tzu

It is debated among historians if Sun Tzu even existed at all. But, for now, we will discuss him with the assumption that he did indeed exist. Sun Tzu, Born in the Spring and Autumn period, was a general, military strategist, philosopher, and author of The Art Of War. Unfortunately not much is known about him. Do comment below if you have heard of any legends about him.
